Both Medieval Otaku and Anime Commentary on the March nominated this little blog for an ABC Award. Thanks so much for thinking of us! We here at rayout are happy with feedback of any kind, but positive feedback? Well we are over the moon. Perhaps this will even thaw the frozen aniblogging heart of Bonen no Max’d.
Acceptance of this nomination entails the following rules:
- Download the award logo and add it to your acceptance post.
- Nominate a few fellow bloggers and share the award.
- Since the award is ABC, take each letter of the alphabet and use it to tell something about yourself.
So, without further adieu…
Biographical Alphabet Shenanigans
-/-/I promise to be brief/-/-
A – Anime World Order. My favorite anime podcast. These guys helped cement my anime fandom and introduced me to a whole lot of stuff I would have otherwise missed. I still go back and listen to those Decade in Review shows every six months or so.
B – Brother. I’ve got a younger one of these. He lives far away, and I miss the guy.
C – Catholic. I was not born one. I am one now. I am happy with this.
D – Dostoyevsky. The man who wrote the best book I’ve ever read, The Brothers Karamozov.
E –Eighty thousand – Number of curse words I used while watching Ninja Resurrection.
F – Final Fantasy. I am not a hardcore gamer anymore, but when I was I poured hours and hours into this series. I played 6-12. Some of those games are among my very favorite. Though I didn’t love each one equally, I enjoyed my time with them, and I still think about them.
G – Griffith. The best villain in all of anime, nay, all of fiction. The true main character and reason to watch the Berserk anime.
H –“Heaven’s On Fire.” – Song by Swedish indie band The Radio Dept. I usually tailor my music selection to the mood I’m in, but this song transcends that criterion. I keep coming back to it again and again and finding different things about it that resonate with me.
I – “I Only Said.” If I had to pick a favorite album, I’d probably chose My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless. If I then had to chose a favorite individual track from that disc, it’d be “I Only Said.” My best friend hates that MBV record and used to make fun of me constantly for liking it. Ah, friendship.
J – Jeans. I prefer them over slacks. They are more comfortable.
K – Kids. I’ve got ’em. I love ’em. They make up so much of who I am. Being a good father is the most important thing in this world to me.
L – Liverpool Football Club. I love sports, football/soccer being the one I enjoy most of all. I started following Liverpool in 2008, and they have become one of my obsessions. I never grew up following a “team,” so this was my first and only experience of this kind. I watch these boys every week. YNWA.
M – Mecha. My favorite genre of anime. I find it can accommodate a wide variety of tones, themes, character types and stories. I can get my hot-blooded Go Nagai from Getter Robo Armageddon, my psychodrama from Evangelion and my love story from Eureka 7.
N – Nissan Sentra – The kind of car I drive and have driven since 1999. I need a new one.
O – Old Forrester. Current brand of whiskey I have in my cabinet. Whiskey sours are an essential component of the week.
P – Philosophy. I have an MA in it. I enjoy it. At one point, I thought I would make a career in it. But, I want to live, so I chose another profession. Lovely hobby, though.
Q – Quaker. My preferred brand of any granola or oatmeal based product.
R – Reinhard von Lohengramm. Not only is he my favorite anime character and the best character in Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but he was, most importantly, right. Suck it, Yang.
S – Sheryl Nome. One of the strongest female characters in anime and one of my personal favorites. Sheryl’s differing character arcs in the Macross Frontier TV show and movies made me think about alternate universes and retellings in a different way. Her song will live on in my heart.
T – Twitter. My preferred method of social media communication.
U –Universals. Probably the thing I spent the most time thinking about in my academic life that the fewest number of people on this planet give a fuck about. The existence of universals is this problem that medieval philosophers grappled with.
V – Video games. A hobby I used to invest much more of my time in before becoming a serious anime fan. I still like the idea of video games and want to play them; I just sort of get bored after about half an hour and want to watch some anime.
W – Wife, My. I couldn’t have made it through any of the struggles of my adult life without her. She is funny, beautiful and much smarter than me. Sometimes she watches anime with me, which is super fun!
X – X/1999. A Rintaro anime film I bought when it came out, sight unseen, and promptly showed to a big group of friends (many of whom were new to anime). Anyone who has seen it knows how bad of an idea this was.
Y – Yo Gabba Gabba! – The show my kids watch that I am the most down for. Don’t judge me; the music is good.
Z – Zeiram, Iria. First non-Dragon Ball Z anime I sought out and liked. I loved its gritty, sci-fi universe, its dark mood and itscharacter designs. I need to rewatch it and see if it still holds up.
