rayout Anime Blog is the creation of The Subtle Doctor and Bonen no Maxd, two dudes who became bros through the internet, because of their shared love of Japanese cartoons.  We also think we can write, so we decided to channel our creative energies into this blog.  It is our meager contribution to the fan community.  Hopefully, some people get some enjoyment out of it, and we can connect with other anime fans through this space.  Thanks for reading!

Here is a link to a post that contains some autobiographical detail of TheSubtleDoctor.

The Subtle Doctor’s Approach to Blogging

Many of the anime blogs I read tend to analyze things either from a cinematic perspective or a structural one.  While I have and will write posts using this method, I naturally tend to take a different analytical angle.  I suppose one might categorize it as a literary approach or a narrative-focused one.  Rather than beginning with questions like, “Does this succeed as a film?” or “Are these genre elements present?” my tendency is to ask, “What worldview do these characters/creators posses?”  “What themes are present in this story?”  I see anime (and all art, really) as a vessel to convey  some message, whether that be trifling or grandiose.  I assume, for better or worse, anime creators have something they wish to communicate to the audience.  Though I am a proponent of simply enjoying the experience of an anime, I kind of can’t help but wonder as I watch, “What are the creators trying to say, or, better still, what do they say or presume without explicitly trying to do so?”

I also often overlay theories from western philosophy onto anime.  Though the creators aren’t often thinking in such categories, I find that this hermeneutic can bear some fascinating fruit.  I do this only because I’m familiar with that tradition and think that the process leads to interesting results, not because of a belief in the superiority of western thinking, etc.

The above is meant to be an introduction and/or guide to what you can expect from my writing here.  It is not a value judgment contra the approaches taken by other bloggers.
